Guide Choosing Natural Stone for Stairs: An Indoor and Outdoor Guide

01 — The Process

From survey to clean handover, step by step.

  1. 01

    Survey and measurement

The staircase is measured on site; the number of steps, riser heights and landing details are taken.

  2. 02

    Stone and surface selection

Stone, thickness and surface finish (polished, honed, with anti-slip grooves) are chosen for the place of use.

  3. 03

    Production

Steps, risers, landings and skirtings are produced to project sizes and quantities; the nosing profile is worked.

  4. 04

    Installation and handover

Installation is done with level and elevation checks; the staircase is handed over clean and ready to use.

Stones We Use

Indoors, marble is a frequent choice; on outdoor stairs, granite and hard stones with a suitable surface finish stand out against frost, wear and slipping. Step thickness and surface finish follow the intensity of use.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions asked most before deciding.

Which stone suits an outdoor staircase?

Outdoors, choose stones that resist sun, rain and temperature swings and carry a non-slip surface; granite stands out in these conditions. Since polished surfaces can be slippery outdoors, we recommend honed, brushed or sandblasted finishes.

How is slip resistance achieved on steps?

Through the surface finish (honed/brushed) and, where needed, anti-slip grooves or strips cut near the step edge. The solution depends on whether the staircase is indoors or outdoors and how heavily it is used.

Can you install over existing steps?

In most cases, yes; the condition of the existing staircase is assessed during the survey. If levels, door openings and riser heights allow, the existing structure can be clad over.

What determines the price of stair work?

The number and size of steps, the chosen stone, thickness, surface finish and installation conditions determine the price. An exact quote follows on-site measurement.
